Chief Executive of The Economist explaining his success:
“The single biggest reason why we’re successful is that we are very, very lucky.” To underline that he is being serious, or semi-serious at least, he points to “the extraordinary luck” of publishing an international magazine in English, which has become a universal language. Then there was the arrival of globalisation. We didn’t seek it, he says, it just came to us.
We hear too much explanations which seem complex in their nature but hide just one simple fact: we were lucky.
MIT researchers have now taken a major step toward that goal (building computer systems that could replicate the human brain’s talent for learning new tasks) by designing a computer chip that mimics how the brain’s neurons adapt in response to new information. This phenomenon, known as plasticity, is believed to underlie many brain functions, including learning and memory.
