This year, one of the most oft-cited trends is the “ultrabook.” Judging from the companies’ announcements at the show and some of the coverage they’ve received, you might think that’s a new sort of device or a radically new type of laptop. But, really, they’re just laptops. Small, thin laptops — but laptops.

Hear! Hear! I said this all along. There is no such thing as ultrabooks. Nor is the MacBook Air a different device als the MacBook pro. Nor are thin laptops MacBook Air ripoffs by definition. It’s Moore’s law for crying out loud.

Sigh. Ultrabooks it will be but why oh why does it have to be a different category? It’s slim notebooks. Just like netbooks were laptops with a smaller screens.
